1200kW Francis Hydro Turbine for Pumped Storage Systems
The Francis turbine fills a critical gap between Pelton and Kaplan turbines and is widely used in hydroelectric power generation. These turbines operate effectively within water head ranges from 10 to 600 meters and are primarily designed for electric power generation. Their power output, calculated from water head and flow rate, typically ranges from 10 to over 700 megawatts. A distinct advantage of Francis turbines is their dual functionality - they can also operate as water pumps, making them ideal for pumped storage systems.
Key Components & Design Features
1. Water Inlet System
The water inlet system includes connecting pipe, turbine inlet valve, and expansion joint. The turbine inlet valve closes the unit in static water during shutdown and cuts water flow during emergencies or turbine distributor failures. The expansion joint compensates for installation errors and facilitates maintenance. A drainage valve is located at the bottom for system drainage.
2. Spiral Case
The welded spiral case contains fixed guide vanes that create controlled water swirl patterns, directing water flow into the guide vane apparatus and runner. An air relief valve on top exhausts air during initial water filling operations.
3. Turbine Distributor
Comprising guide vanes, guide vane levers, shaft sleeves, and covers, the distributor forms and adjusts water swirl patterns to regulate turbine discharge according to load variations. It also facilitates normal and emergency shutdown procedures. The precisely machined 16 guide vanes (860mm spacing circle diameter) ensure vibration-free operation and feature hydraulic torque for self-closing from full to no-load opening.
4. Runner Assembly
As the heart of the turbine, the runner converts water energy into mechanical energy. The welded stainless steel construction (ZG0Cr13Ni4Mo) provides excellent anti-cavitation, anti-corrosion, and weldability properties. Gap-type sealing minimizes water leakage, and 16 pressure relief holes on the runner crown reduce water pressure impact.
